Enjoy Some Turkish Delights

Stretching across a narrow strait between Asia and Europe, Istanbul (IST) is the only city in the world that connects two continents. Due to Istanbul's location, the Greeks, Romans and Venetians all ruled the city at one point or another, so the city has many fascinating tales to tell. As the most popular destination in Turkey, it has impressive architecture, historic sites and plenty of shopping and dining options. Turkish cuisine is delicious and extremely diverse, combining many cultures, so be sure to sample delicacies such as köfte (a meatball dish), baklava (a sweet pastry containing nuts and honey) and of course, lokum (Turkish delight).

Sights to Visit in Istanbul

  • The Basilica Cistern was built in the 6th century and provides a fascinating insight into a system that at one point brought drinking water into Istanbul.
  • The Topkapı Palace is a must-see during your travels. Once home to many generations of sultans and their wives, the palace turned museum provides a glimpse into their lives with a treasury, a harem and beautiful pavilions.
  • The Blue Mosque, otherwise known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, is one of Istanbul's main structures. Breathtaking with its six minarets and hand-painted blue tiles lining the interior walls, the mosque was built between 1609 and 1616, during the rule of Ahmed I. Don't forget to take off your shoes before you go in!
