In our company, we view sustainability as development that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the capacity of future generations. This means striking a balance between economic growth, care for the environment, social well-being and sound corporate governance by relying on ESG criteria.

Under the name Flight 2030, we include all the ongoing projects, and all those that are to come, because this commitment to sustainability is constant and evolving.

Air Europa has the following certifications that guarantee our compliance with environmental (ISO 14001:2015 and EMAS) and quality (ISO 9001:2015) requirements for all Air Europa operations in the air transport of passengers and goods in general. Our Flight Operations Support and Control Department also boasts occupational health and safety (ISO 45001:2018) and cybersecurity (ISO 27001:2013) certifications

We invite you to discover the company's most relevant initiatives, grouped into four major blocks: Environmental, Social, Economic and Governance Actions.

Make your flight more sustainable

A more sustainable trip begins when you leave home and head to the airport. Travel on public transport

Use digital solutions. Download your boarding card on your mobile. It's more convenient and cuts down on paper use.

Pre-book your meal and other products for your next flight through the On-board Menu. This not only reduces food waste, but also the weight of the aeroplane.

Remember to carry a reusable bottle and fill it at water outlets in the airport to reduce the use of plastic bottles.

Help reduce light pollution. If you're going to sleep, we recommend turning off the light. This way, you can rest properly and make everyone else more comfortable.

Support local communities by visiting local shops and restaurants instead of international chains during your stay.

Environmental Actions

As a company, we realise that our environmental initiatives and actions are wide-ranging and involve all our stakeholders to a greater or lesser extent. This is why we separate them into four sections, measuring both the scope of each and every one of them, and the synergies created between them: Airline, Operational Viewpoint, Employees and Customers.

 1. Participation in sustainability collaboration and innovation initiatives

The SkyTeam Alliance launches the Aviation Challenge to promote best environmental and sustainability practices across all areas, inspiring airlines to find new ways to reduce their carbon footprint and share their findings with each other.

  • In 2023, Air Europa was ranked first for “Lowest CO2 emissions in short-haul” and “Lowest CO2 emissions for ground operations” within the categories being evaluated.
  • Air Europa and, new in 2024, Air Europa Express, are working on different projects and initiatives in the different areas of sustainability, like participating in the third edition of the contest, which provides a test bed for implementing actions in regular operations.

 2. Sustainable Fuels

Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) are fuels produced from renewable raw materials such as non-food organic waste, which generate up to 80% lower atmospheric emissions compared to conventional fuels when considering the analysis of the entire life cycle, from production to consumption. At Air Europa, we are already phasing in the use of SAF on our flights.

 4ALTA

Air Europa also takes part in the Fuel and Sustainability Committees of ALTA (Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association), which aim to develop, produce and use SAF in this geographic area.

 4Air Europa Vehicle Fleet

We are changing our car fleet, replacing diesel and petrol vehicles with their equivalent in electric cars or higher efficiency versions. In addition, the average age of ground-handling vehicles and equipment is 6.18 years, showing our commitment to the most modern and efficient cars.

 5Planting the Air Europa Forest

In collaboration with CO2Gestión, we have planted a new forest with 1,700 trees in Riba de Saelices (Guadalajara), which will help restore the forest devastated by the fire of 2005, and which will offset 168 t of CO2* released into the atmosphere.

*Over a 50-year period, according to the MITERD calculator of forecast CO2 absorbed published in 2022.

 6Space optimisation in buildings

To optimise and reduce energy consumption in offices, personnel have been redistributed between the IOC (Integrated Operations Centre) and the main building. These resources have also been optimised in pre-flight briefing rooms, reducing the travel distance so crews can walk to the planes instead of using vehicles.

 7Sustainability clause

We ensure that every contract with our suppliers includes sustainability clauses to guarantee compliance with more sustainable operating standards.

8Implementation of the Electronic Technical Log

With this measure, we will have real-time validated digital records from both the crew and maintenance, giving us up-to-date and accurate information on the status of the fleet, thus improving operational efficiency and reducing paper consumption and the risk of transcription errors.

 9Battery collection points

Air Europa has installed two battery collection points for employees in the Globalia buildings (Llucmajor) and the hangar at the Palma Airport. This initiative helps raise awareness of the importance of separating batteries from other waste, promoting sustainable practices among the population.

 10Separation of waste

Waste is sorted in our offices, maintenance spaces and flights so that all the waste produced by the company is ready to be properly managed and given a second life.

 11Reduction of plastic on board

To carry out this measure, in addition to using biodegradable plastics in our amenities, we will replace the plastic that covers pillows and blankets with a tape that has a lower impact.

 12Catering

We strive to make our catering more sustainable by adapting production to the demands of each flight, thus avoiding food waste. We also seek to adapt the wrapping to the content, thus avoiding overpackaging.

 13Sustainability Committees

We hold regular meetings with different working groups to research and develop new initiatives that promote the company's sustainability performance.

 14Information bites

We strive to provide our team with information and awareness on Sustainability in various formats, with the aim of increasing our employees' awareness and commitment.

 15Training Plan

As part of our strategy, we have developed a sustainability training plan at every level of the company that is tailored to the specific needs of each professional function.

 21Crew Workshops

In-person training workshops for crews on environmental awareness and sensitization, as well as on onboard waste, will be resumed.

 17Environmental awareness seminars

In recognition of the environmental responsibility of our liaisons, we organise awareness sessions for this group and anyone else who wants to participate. One such example is the visit to TIRME, where waste is managed in the Balearic Islands.

 18Environmental Liaisons

Each Air Europa department has one or more Environmental Liaisons assigned. These are people in the department who ensure compliance with good environmental practices, and who forward any incidents, suggestions and environmental issues to the Sustainability Department for more efficient processing.

Our environmental projects for customers are the result of various actions and initiatives that we take and implement in every area of our organisation in an effort to satisfy the needs of our end consumers.

 19Incentivise the digital boarding card

We promote the use of digital boarding cards to cut down on paper use and promote more sustainable practices among our passengers.

 20Advice and information on sustainability

We constantly strive to communicate responsibly and raise our customers' awareness of sustainability, offering advice on our website that promotes best practices, or launching insights into our actions through different media.

Economic Actions

At Air Europa, our commitment to sustainability spans environmental, social and economic aspects. We believe that sound and efficient financial management is essential to ensure the viability and sustainable growth of our company in the long term. Our economic initiatives not only aim to optimise processes, reduce costs and maximise value for shareholders and customers, but also to improve conditions and benefits for our employees. Next, we present our strategies and actions aimed at strengthening the economic aspect of our sustainability, benefiting all stakeholders, including our employees.

 23. Tax Compliance

We have created an awareness of tax compliance in the entire organisation in order to achieve sound tax management, contributing to the diligent and transparent fulfilment of the company's tax responsibilities, and thus creating a more stable system.

 26New flight cancellation protocols

In an effort to improve, we have created a flight cancellation protocol due to bad weather that is specific to each airport with high diversion rates.

 27Improvement through data analysis

Based on the data provided by the FOCC (Flight Operation Control Centre) structure, we have created an analysis system that helps us to improve decision-making within the company.

 28More productive crews

We are improving the productivity of on-board crews through all the resource optimisation measures carried out.

 25Talent Retention Programmes

Development of welfare and benefits programmes that promote employee loyalty and retention, thus reducing the costs associated with staff turnover (comprehensive health insurance, ongoing training programmes, education subsidies, flexible schedules, discounts and agreements, etc.)

Social Actions

As a global company, we are part of society, so our actions involving sustainability must also reflect that commitment in every area of our activity. We firmly believe in the positive impact that a company can have on the community, and the importance of cultivating strong and meaningful relationships. We ensure an adequate level of health protection for all members of the organisation. We promote safe and healthy working environments through activities focused on this purpose: health workshops, articles published on the subject, participation in physical health projects.

42. Organisation of work

The balance of our employees' work and family life and reconciling it with the company's organisational and production needs is one of the main challenges faced by the Group's Management. Measures are being launched to improve this balance that apply to all workers at the Group. Employees continue to have the right to request adaptations to the duration and distribution of the workday.
