A medical certificate is not required to travel with a leg or arm plaster cast. However, please bear in mind the time it takes fit a cast and the flight duration.

Any passengers with a plaster cast that reaches their waist or covers the entire leg must purchase the required number of seats to keep their leg elevated throughout the flight.

For flights under 2 hours

  • If the cast was fitted within the last 48 hours, it is mandatory to split the cast in half longitudinally. This can be done at the hospital or by the airport medical service. No medical certificate is required. However, the passenger must sign a disclaimer, which can be obtained at the check-in desks (except for flights to the USA), indicating the date that the cast was fitted.
  • If the passenger is flying 48 hours or more after the fitting of the plaster cast, it is NOT necessary to sign the disclaimer or provide a medical certificate.

For flights under 2 hours

  • If the cast was fitted within the last 48 hours, it is mandatory to split the cast in half longitudinally. This can be done at the hospital or by the airport medical service. No medical certificate is required. However, the passenger must sign a disclaimer, which can be obtained at the check-in desks (except for flights to the USA), indicating the date that the cast was fitted.

For security reasons, passengers are required to sit in the upright position while the plane is taxiing, during take-off, in the event of mid-flight turbulence and during landing. For passengers who cannot remain in an upright position throughout the flight, an approved safety harness must be used for air travel. For more information: ssr.ux@air-europa.com

Devices over 40 cm wide will not fit between the armrests, so they will not be sufficiently safe.

Passengers travelling on a stretcher or whose needs are not met by auxiliary devices will be subject to rules established for passengers on a stretcher.

The following devices will be considered acceptable on an Air Europa flight provided that they can be properly installed on the respective seat of the aircraft and the passenger signs a Release Form.

  • Pillow. Some passengers have reduced capacity to sit down due to chronic pain. Some suffer from cervical or back pain, chronic pelvic pain, also known as symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) or simply hip pain. People who suffer from coccyx pain also have trouble sitting. Some people can sit on pillows that are trimmed on one side to relieve pressure on the ischiopubic ramus. Other people with spinal cord injuries or orthopaedic problems also find relief this way. For this purpose, Air Europa allows the use of special cushions or wheelchair cushions on flights, provided that they fit the seat and the passenger can fasten their seat belt.
  • Crelling harness. Designed to support and protect passengers (children and adults) with specific requirements. It is not a safety harness, and it must be used in conjunction with the aircraft's safety belt. It works using a series of straps that are adjusted around the back of the seat and are tightened to fit securely (it does not interfere with the movement of the tray table) and uses a 5-point harness.
  • Corset seat. Device that can be equipped with vacuum technology that models and supports the desired posture. It is designed to be used anywhere and fully support the body stabilizing the torso. It is flexible to the touch and easy to install on the seat of the aircraft. It has two side slots through which the seat belt can pass, which must be done before the passenger sits down. An air chamber is located on the back of the seat that can be used to remove the air from the bag, which is modelled into a complete body harness. This may take a few minutes, so the passenger should board ahead of time.
  • Travel seat.Device with head support, fasteners and footrest. Allows disabled passengers with limited torso strength to travel comfortably. It is very similar to a baby car seat in its design. It was developed for children (aged between 3 and 11, although its limitation depends on size/weight) with specific requirements. The travel seat is easily fitted to a conventional seat with an adjustable safety strap and a 5-point harness that provides complete stability to the torso. It is not a safety harness and must be used in conjunction with the safety belt. It has two side slots through which the seat belt can pass, which must be done before the passenger sits down.
  • Limitations. While the width of the plane's seats varies, a device whose dimensions exceed 40 cm (16 in) in width (distance between armrests) probably does not fit, even if the armrests of the plane's seats are folded up completely. A device that does not fit well will not provide adequate protection for the passenger.

General information

A child restraint device (CRD) or child restraint system (CRS) is considered acceptable if it consists of a safety belt extension made using the same techniques and materials as the authorised seat belts.

Air Europa accepts child restraint devices suitable for the child's age on its flights, provided that a seat has been reserved for the child on the flight. Air Europa must always give its confirmation before a child restraint device can be used on board.

The instructions must be used so that the approval labels can be checked. However, Air Europa does not guarantee the device will be successfully fit in the booked seat. If the device does not fit in the seat or cannot be securely fixed, it will be placed on the stowage compartment or in the aircraft hold.

CRDs can be used for babies/children between the ages of 6 months and 3 years. Babies under 6 months of age must be fastened using the seat belt extender.

The CRD or any of its components must not show obvious signs of damage.

 

Permitted fastening systems

CRDs approved for use on aircraft by the following associations and regulations will be accepted on Air Europa flights:

  • JAA.
  • FAA.
  • Transport Canada.
  • Regulation UN/ECE R44.
  • Canadian Regulation CMVSS 213/213.1.
  • Federal safety standard for US motor vehicles FMVSS no. 213.
  • "Qualification Procedure for Child Restraint Systems for use in aircraft" (TÜV Doc.: TÜV/958-01/2001).

The following models, among others, meet the required certifications: Maxi Cosi Citi, Maxi Cosi Mico, Luftikid UNO, Luftikid DUO, Römer King QuickFix (except the Römer King QuickFix model with authorisation no. 03301122), Römer Baby Safe bzw, Storchenmühle Maximum SP.

The usage instructions for most CRDs sold in Spain contain the statement "aprobado de acuerdo con la norma ECE R 44", or "approved according to the regulation ECE R44" in English.

CRDs approved by the United States and manufactured after February 26, 1985 must bear the following statements in red letters:

i. "THIS CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEM CONFORMS TO ALL APPLICABLE FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS".

ii. "THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT"

The CARES (Child Aviation Restraint System) flight harness will also be allowed. It is an H-design harness authorised by the FAA that can be easily transported and is attached to a normal plane seat as a two-point safety belt.

It is approved for use by children weighing between 10 and 20 kg (22 and 44 lb), whose height is 100 cm (40 in) or under and who are able to sit upright without help. This device must bear a label indicating "Approved by the FAA in accordance with 14CFR 21,305 (d); approved only for use on aircraft".

 

Limitations

While the width of the plane's seats varies, a CRD whose dimensions exceed 40 cm (16 in) in width (distance between armrests) probably does not fit, even if the armrests of the plane's seats are folded up completely. A device that does not fit well will not provide adequate protection for the baby/child.

Air Europa cabin crew may deny use of the CRD if it does not meet the necessary safety specifications. In this case, babies would be fastened with the seat belt extender in the lap of the accompanying adult. In this case, the additional seat will not be eligible for refund (if applicable).

The "Losing Your Fear of Flying" courses are run by Alfonso de Bertodano, a pilot with more than 28 years of experience and a Captain of Boeing 787 aircraft with over 15,000 flight hours. He is a psychologist (Licence No.: M-26714) and a fear of flying specialist. His combined knowledge of both fields, aviation and psychology, is one of the reasons why these courses are so successful.

The content is based on the most effective therapy techniques to overcome phobias and basic aviation knowledge covering every aspect of flying, operating procedures, meteorology, maintenance, and security measures used today.

You will also learn exercises to control and manage your anxiety and have the chance to put them into practice on two round trip flights.

You will implement these techniques during the flights under the supervision of psychologists and Bertodano himself, who will explain all phases of the flight and any circumstances that may arise.

The course lasts for two days and is held in Madrid, Barcelona, and Palma de Mallorca.
