Medical assistance

Do you need to transport and/or use medical equipment? Should you inform the company of your health status to fly? In this section you will find all the information you need.

General terms of use of medical devices

Please notify Air Europa at the time of booking or no later than 48 hours before the flight leaves regarding the transport of medical equipment on board to check the respective policy.

If you are travelling with medication and/or vital medical equipment, you may carry them free of charge in a single bundle under 23 kg, in addition to the baggage allowance allowed in your fare.

In order to ensure that medication or medical equipment is considered vital, unless a different standard is specified in subsequent sections, you must have a certificate issued by your doctor within 10 days of the scheduled flight departure date confirming that it is essential that you carry this medication or equipment.

Medication or medical equipment must be carried separately from the normal baggage allowance in order to facilitate identification at check-in.

The use of medical devices is not allowed in emergency rows.

If it is permitted and you need to use the medical equipment, it may be carried:

  • Under the seat in front
  • In the seat next to yours. This last option means paying the amount of an additional seat on the flight.

If it is not going to be used or is not allowed to be used during the flight:

  • Under the seat in front
  • In the luggage compartment
  • In checked baggage. They must be completely protected to avoid any accidental activation.
  • In the seat next to yours. This last option means paying the amount of an additional seat on the flight.

At Air Europa, we do not require a medical certificate for the transport of a POC, provided that it is not for use during the flight.

If your function is required during the flight, you should contact via email to requerimientomedico@aireuropa.com explaining your case.

It will be necessary to attach two documents filled in by your doctor:

1-Official medical certificate. The document must inform of the following points:

  • The user who is to use the POC is able to understand the warnings of the POC and to act appropriately without assistance.
  • Indicate whether it is to be used during part or all of the flights in the itinerary.
  • The maximum oxygen flow rate in liters per minute corresponding to the aircraft cabin pressure under normal operating conditions.

2-Air Europa Medical Authorization Template. (Download template)

Both documents must be issued within 10 days prior to departure of the flight, and sent no later than 48 hours (working days) before departure of the flight.

You cannot be seated in an exit row seat or in a bulkhead seat if you intend to use a POC. Your POC must meet the following conditions to be allowed on board:

Ensure that the portable oxygen concentrator (POC) that you transport for use on board (manufacturer and model) correspond to those permitted for use on board and it is in good working condition.

Availability of electrical outlets and/or electrical supply on board of all the aircrafts cannot be guaranteed, therefore you have to carry on flight a sufficient number of spare (extra) batteries to cover 150% of the flight time

Ensure that all extra batteries transported in carry-on baggage (their carriage is not permitted in your checked baggage) are individually packed in plastic bags, cardboard boxes, etc., in a manner that they do not contact metal objects, including the terminals of other batteries to avoid short circuit.

Below, you will find the models authorised for transport and use on board:

In order to use your respiratory assistance device, you must have a medical certificate issued within 10 days of the flight's departure and it must be fitted with a dry/gel battery. However, if it is not going be used during the flight, no certificate will be required.

The following types of devices will not be accepted:

  • Any powered by wet batteries.
  • Any that require electrical outlets during the flight in order to function.
  • Any that may cause electromagnetic interference.

The device may be transported under the seat in front or on the adjoining seat. This last option entails paying the cost of an additional seat on the plane. If you want to transport it in the hold, it must be completely turned off and protected to avoid damage or accidental activation.

Transporting oxygen devices (cylinders) for personal use, including those containing compressed oxygen and liquid oxygen, is not permitted on Air Europa flights.

Such cylinders may only be carried, both in hand luggage and checked baggage, if the regulating valve is disconnected, leaving the cylinder completely empty. Air Europa must give its prior authorisation at least 48 hours before departure.

In exceptional cases, with prior authorisation from the Air Europa medical service, medical oxygen will be allowed to be transported and used, provided that it is supplied by a specialised company and it meets the requirements specified by each destination country.

Transporting dry ice in quantities not exceeding 2.5 kg per person is permitted when used to pack perishable substances, provided that the suitcase allows carbon dioxide gas to be released and the items requiring dry ice are identified.

Air Europa must give its authorisation if passengers wish to carry it, both in hand luggage and in checked baggage.

You can carry your medicines in the cabin, provided that they comply with the regulations concerning operational security, airport security and dangerous goods.

You must carry any medicines on your person, separated from your hand luggage and checked baggage, for quick identification at check-in.

If the medicines require a medical authorisation or prescription, always carry it with you.

Syringes and all other injection instruments are not on the list of prohibited items in the cabin. They will therefore be accepted in the cabin and in the hold. However, in order to be able to insert hypodermic needles in the cabin, a medical certificate must be presented at the time of check-in.
